We are approaching our 2nd month of being away from the US, and I'm finally getting around to creating this blog. A lot has happened, and so I'll use the next couple of posts to catch people up. In a nutshell, by the 2nd week, we'd been in 4 different countries, taken 8 flights, driven two cars, and gotten one haircut. If you count the month of December, that's two more countries (India and United Arab Emirates) on the list... and now I have to get more pages added to my passport.
While we've been slow to get this blog started, we have been uploading pictures regularly. The complete album is available on Facebook, but we're putting the highlight reels on Shutterfly, so anyone can view the pictures, and so that we won't bore you with hundreds of pictures of a glacier. Nevertheless, we'll also slip in a few pictures here, so we'll be doing our part in bogging down the internet.
Our journey began with a Cathay Pacific flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong. We had a 20 hour layover in HK, planned of course, to allow us 1) a chance to see a new city and 2) break up the journey. After some shady negotiations with the airline, we were able to get our bags checked all the way to Singapore, so we only had to look after our carry-ons while in HK. We got into the hotel room at around 8pm, and we had to muster up every ounce of energy we had to force ourselves to venture downtown. Why plan a layover, and hotel stay if we weren't going to see Hong Kong? So we headed down to the lobby, and in the elevator, we ran into an American. Knowing that American sightings will be increasingly few and far between, we immediately struck up a conversation. He was heading downtown to meet his coworkers, so we all split a cab. It worked out pretty well, because we were too tired to plan anything specific about where we want to go, and this way, we got a discounted ride right into the heart of the city.
Downtown Hong Kong is an amazingly vibrant city. I don't know which neighborhood we were in, but people were out and about long into the night. There was no shortage of restaurants and bars, and the energy in the city was awesome. Still, the jetlag proved too much, and by midnight, we were back in the hotel room, exhausted.
The next morning, we rewarded ourselves by staying in bed, getting late check out, and watching Bring it On Cinco. Though we felt the same guilt we had the night before which motivated us to explore the city, it just felt too good to simply lounge in bed all morning, and we knew we'd be back in HK on our way back to San Francisco. So we relaxed that morning, casually got to the airport to complete our trip to our new home in Singapore. We are going to have plenty of time to explore...
