Australian Doubles

It just so happened that the first weekend we were in Australia, the Australian Open was going on in Melbourne.  I haven't played tennis in years (aka decades), so I haven't really kept up with it, but we thought it would be fun to check out the event.  We bought tickets for Saturday, which allowed us in-and-out access all day, daytime access to the Rod Laver Arena (where the finals would be played at night), and the rest of the grounds.  The other night, to get pumped up, we watched the women's semi-finals on TV, and through this, we jumped onto the Li Na bandwagon.

At the Open, we were able to catch the junior men's finals, a showdown between some Czech kid and the local favorite Luke Saville.  Unfortunately for the majority of fans there, Luke lost, but it was entertaining to watch a handful of drunk girls raucously cheering on the Australian contender.  If there were more than 8 people in the crowd, I'm sure someone would've cared.

After the Junior finals, we watched the wheel chair finals.  Now that is some impressive tennising.   After just a few minutes of watching, you don't even notice that the athletes are in wheelchairs.  Kudos to these guys for a hard fought match.

We then were able to watch our very own Li Na as she practiced with her coach before that night's finals against Kijm Clijsters.  Standing only a few feet from her and her coach, we were able to get a few photos before heading back to the city.  The day was long, and we thought we'd take a break from all the tennis action and explore more of Melbourne.  So of course, I thought it would a good idea to check out the Crown Entertainment Complex, i.e. the casino!

One of the few times I went to a casino and did not gamble, we toured the massive CEC, that has tons of top-notch restaurants, a movie theater, and tons of shopping.  They even had a Winnebago!  But all we did was walk around and enjoy the air conditioning, a welcome break from the warm outdoor weather, especially at the Open.

After visiting Crown, we went back to watch the tennis women's finals.  Our tickets just got us onto the grounds (literally), so we had to watch on the big screen with all the proles, sitting on the grass.  But just as the match started, an elderly German couple sitting at a table left, and Kavita was Joanna-on-the spot, securing a prime, front row table for the match, probably a better view than many who paid in excess of $200, to watch the match about 200 yards away, in the Rod Laver Arena.
