We got into Singapore on a Saturday night. So Sunday was really our only day to explore together, since Kavita had to be in the office on Monday. We also knew that there was a Melbourne trip around the corner, and we were waiting to hear about that. Since there's no free breakfast on Sundays, we were forced to explore beyond the walls of Fraser Place.
One of my favorite things about Singapore is that nothing is happening (at least in our neighborhood) before 10am on the weekends. So there's no pressure to wake up early. But if you're jetlagged, mornings can be tough. Most of the restaurants in our area were closed, so we strolled over to Liang Court, the nearby mall, since we heard we could find the Golden Arches there. That was not our goal, but we figured we'd find more options along the way, and if not, at least there was a Teriyaki McChicken waiting for me. The Liang Court food court (called Kopitiam) is what happens when hawker stands get a Western makeover. A great way to try out a bunch of local favorites, and you can leave the hand sanitizer at home.
Kopitiam was just opening for the day, so the options were limited, but we got some kaya toast and coffee. Kaya may not look all that appetizing (it's a lime-green butter with a coconut flavor), but it's very delish. I'm already fired up about the next 6 months of culinary experimentation!!
That evening, we found out that the company booked Kavita's flight to Melbourne for Tuesday, so then I had to scramble to find a reasonable fare for my ticket. I booked my flight for Wednesday. We hardly had a day in Singapore before finding out we'd be in Melbourne for a month. We were thrilled at the opportunity, as Australia is far enough from Singapore (8 hr flight) to discourage even a long weekend trip, but we weren't sure how much vacation time we'd get while in Singapore. So while we wanted to go to Australia, we didn't think we'd make it out there for a visit while we were in Singapore. Especially since we'd need at least 2-3 weeks to really explore Australia. But the planets aligned such that now it looked like we'd get that chance.
Everything up until now has been so hectic, we haven't even taken any pictures in Singapore. We did take a bunch in Australia, so these postings will get a little more visually appealing pretty soon. Just as we're getting caught up on this blog, we're also uploading our pictures on Shutterfly, so you'll at least get to see what we'll be writing about in an upcoming post. Feel free to browse our pictures from Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand in the meantime. Email me for the password.
